Heartland Behavioral Acute Care Services

Our pediatric behavioral health crisis stabilization unit provides a comfortable, nurturing environment for young people ages 4 through 17 to heal. Male and female patients receiving treatment here will experience personalized, individual trauma-focused therapy as well as group and creative therapies to assist them in the holistic restructuring of thoughts and behaviors. Acute mental health care at Heartland Behavioral Health Services uses evidence-based treatment to address mental health issues such as mental illness and traumatic stress resulting from the experience of a traumatic event. We also offer several unique Therapeutic Amenities at Heartland, such as our Equestrian Therapy Program.

Our patients are children and adolescents who may be a harm to themselves or others around them. During this time of a child’s crisis, it’s our objective to get the child admitted as quickly as possible. For patients immediately in danger of harming themselves, we offer suicidal youth mental health services and crisis stabilization.

After admission to Heartland Behavioral Health Services, a treatment team of mental health professionals will develop an individualized treatment model for each patient, accounting for their particular needs and strengths.

Children and adolescents are encouraged to be actively involved in multiple levels of treatment with multiple team members to include the following:

Individual and family therapy takes place weekly. Family therapy may occur via telephone or video conferencing if distance prohibits the family from traveling to the facility. During treatment, parents have the opportunity to engage with the child’s therapist to assist in the development of treatment goals. Patients will be seen by their assigned doctor daily to review progress with stabilization, discuss effects of medication and identify readiness for discharge.

Patients are also assigned a case manager that will communicate with parents regarding schedule time of a treatment plan and will work with parents to help establish follow-up outpatient appointments for ongoing care once patients return home.

Program components include:

  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Medication evaluation
  • Individual treatment team planning
  • Behavior management program
  • Activity therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Patient education groups
  • Group therapy
  • Substance abuse assessment and treatment (on an individual basis)
