Creative Arts Therapy

Creative Arts Therapy

Learning and Growing Through Art

Creative arts therapy uses arts modalities and creative processes during intentional intervention in therapeutic, rehabilitative, community or educational settings.

This helps to promote:

  • Good mental health
  • Communication
  • Expression
  • The integration of physical, emotional, cognitive and social functioning
  • Enhanced self-awareness
  • Behavioral change.

Creative arts therapists at our therapeutic residential facility work with patients to develop coping skills for intense emotional distress, while enhancing relaxation.

The creative arts therapies include, but are not limited to:

  • Visual art therapy – utilizes visual arts such as drawing, painting, collage or coloring to help patients express emotions through art
  • Drama therapy – the use of drama or theater for expressive and therapeutic purposes
  • Dance/Movement therapy – therapeutic use of dance to cope with psychological distress
  • Music therapy – guided by a music therapist, music therapy makes a therapeutic connection to address psychological, emotional and cognitive issues
  • Poetry therapy – the use of writing and reading poetry to make a psychological connection and enhance well-being
  • Psychodrama – a form of therapy in which patients act out a traumatic event from their past
