Amenities That Set Us Apart

Our dedicated clinical and behavioral health specialists embrace evidence-based therapeutic modalities while keeping the utmost commitment to trauma informed care.

Heartland Behavioral Health Services is proud to offer an array of therapeutic amenities to treat depression, stress and anxiety. Situated on a stunning 50-acre campus in Nevada, Missouri, Heartland incorporates the outdoors into many components of each child’s acute care and therapeutic residential facility experience.

Inside of our care facilities we have a full bowling alley, gym, expressive art therapy room. We offer activities conducive to a focus on healing such as sand-tray therapy, Theraplay® and even a therapy dog, Molly!

We employ the physicians (psychiatrists) and nurse practitioners at Heartland Behavioral Health Services — allowing for their full attention to be dedicated to our patients. All of our therapists are trained specifically in the treatment of acute psychiatric needs of children, as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

On average, patients are with us from five to ten days. Our mental health professionals focus on making each child’s transition back into their own community setting as seamless as possible.

Some of the amenities offered by Heartland include:

  • Equestrian Therapy Program – Heartland’s newly renovated, one-of-a-kind equestrian program has long been loved by residents and offers a unique way to heal.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment that emphasizes individual therapy and group skills classes. Our DBT therapists help patients learn and use new skills and strategies to live better lives.
  • Recreational Therapy – Kids have the opportunity to participate in activities such as kickball, Wiffle ball, initiative games, problem solving and all types of recreational activities.
  • Creative Arts Therapy – Creative Arts Therapy uses the creative process to foster health, promote social functioning, enhance self-awareness and facilitate change.
  • Sand Tray Therapy – Sand Tray Therapy is a technique that allows children to express themselves by using sand and figurines to create a scene that tells the story of who they are.
  • Theraplay® – Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy method that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
  • Molly, our therapy dog – Molly has been bred to be a therapy dog. She is an Irish Doodle which means that she is hypoallergenic (absent of shedding) and hospital ready — she’s currently in training and has visited us many times to participate in therapy sessions with our patients.
